All except the
smallest building projects now require the appointment of a Planning
Supervisor to oversee the health and safety aspects of a
project.
CT+G act on many projects where we are
involved as designers as well as acting as independent Planning
Supervisors. We are corporate members of the Association of Planning
Supervisors (the leading professional body in this field) and have
to comply with their strict quality requirements. As designers, our
working knowledge of the Regulations ensures that they are properly
and economically applied.
Isn’t
this just more red tape?
The
CDM Regulations came into force in 1995 to address the poor safety
record of the construction industry, to ensure that health and
safety issues are considered while a project is still on the drawing
board, so that potential problems will be avoided by good design.
Won’t
this cost money?
Compliance
with the Regulations from the start of the project should result in
cost savings – fewer problems on site and a significant reduction
in the risk of accidents will help to avoid delays in the
construction process. The input of a Planning Supervisor during the
design process will also ensure that there are fewer problems during
subsequent maintenance and alterations to a building, as the
building will have its own owner’s manual – the Health &
Safety File.
